J. Gulotta

My Plays

I write worlds that draw from classical Greek theatre, commedia dell'arte, and sketch and improv comedy.

My casts feature superheroes, aliens, molemen, bank-robbing sheep, sentient iPhones, sailor-mouthed nuns and resurrected cats.

But the absurdist facade of my sitcom scenarios are really disturbing mirror realities of our own world.

My plays get serious while the audience is still laughing. The comedy waters down subversive themes and allows audiences to lower their defenses before confronting them with the societal lunacies we tolerate in our own communities.

Despite the farcical aesthetic, my plays are works of radical literature that can serve as catalysts for discourse and action.

My History

My plays have been featured in the Shoebox Festival and the SoLow Festival in Philadelphia, the Fertile Ground Festival in Portland, OR, the William Inge Theatre Festival in Independence, KS, and at the Metropolitan Playhouse and Theatre At St. Clements in NYC.

I was part of the writing ensemble for International WOW's immersive play "Reconstruction" which premiered in the Ice Factory Festival and received an additional run as part of the Ohio Theatre's regular season.

My play "Ewe & Eye" can be found in the literary journal "RiverSedge" and my play "Sheep! A Comedy With Songs" is part of the short play anthology "Stage It! Vol. 2".

I received my MFA in Playwriting from The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University.

I'm a proud member of the Dramatists Guild.
